Seasonal Affective Disorder: Beating Fall And Winter Blues

seasonal affective disorderSeasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, has an untold number of people suffering every year.  While autumn can be a gorgeous time of year – with those fiery red and deep golden leaves falling gently to the ground, the air turns refreshingly crisp – it can also be the start of a struggle against seasonal depression.  Here’s a brief rundown of SAD and it’s symptoms and treatments.

Symptoms Of Fall and Winter Blues

Although seasonal depression isn’t a recognized disorder on its own, doctors and psychotherapists do consider it to be a viable sub-group of depression.  Because of this, many of the symptoms are similar, such as:

  • Feeling depressed or hopeless
  • Anxious
  • Loss of energy
  • Social withdrawal
  • Oversleeping
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Difficulty concentrating or processing info

Seasonal affective disorder is also characterized by these symptoms:

  • Weight gain
  • Changes in appetite (usually a craving for carbs)
  • Symptoms come and go usually around the same time each year

Treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder

If you think you might be suffering from SAD, or any depression in general, it’s best to see a doctor immediately.  There are many treatments available, including conventional anti-depressant drugs, or alternative treatments such as light-box therapy (a special light that mimics daylight and has been known to help those suffering from SAD).

Many women in particular, like to banish winter blues by hitting the tanning bed.  Unfortunately, this isn’t the best solution.  Tanning has been known to not only damage skin and cause premature aging, it also can contribute to skin cancer.  A better alternative would be to visit your doctor, or purchase a special light like the one mentioned above.

Seasonal Affective Disorder can make any fall or winter an unpleasant, endless one, but this doesn’t have to be.  By taking steps to beat winter blues, you can ensure that you enjoy the cold months more than ever.
